Save money, increase resident comfort and help the environment by improving your energy efficiency

Improving Energy Efficiency

The social housing sector is a large consumer of electricity, natural gas, water, and materials. In fact, the sector spends approximately $400 million a year on utilities. It is by far the largest controllable cost within social housing. With operating dollars always needing to be stretched, improving energy efficiency is one way providers can make smart choices that save money, increase resident comfort and are good for the environment.

Below, are some resources that can help you make smart choices on improving the energy efficiency of your property.

Training

GLOBE: Inspiring Resident Involvement

Involving residents is key to the success of any conservation plan: the more people get “on-board,” the better the results.  Offered by HSC subsidiary, GLOBE, this workshop focuses on the behavioural side of conservation as well as strategies to positively engage residents and staff in water and energy conservation and waste management activities.

  • Resident Engagement on Conservation: One of the best ways to maximize energy savings is through positive resident behaviour. The GLOBE Community Champion program is designed to help communities achieve their conservation objectives by engaging residents to become part of the solution.  This award-winning program works with housing providers to train and support residents so they become agents of change in their own communities.
  • Green Cleaning Products at Bulk Rates: The GLOBE Green Cleaning Program offers an opportunity for housing providers in Ontario to purchase green cleaning products at negotiated competitive bulk purchasing rates. The program is offered by GLOBE and Flexo Products Ltd., in partnership with the Ontario Non-Profit Housing Association (ONPHA) and the Cooperative Housing Federation of Toronto (Co-op Cost Cutters).
